After 23 years of corporate life – armed with all the lessons from other entrepreneurs and start-ups on the web, I embarked last year to set up a consulting business in HR. It’s been a journey filled with challenges, learning and fulfilment. As I near our 1st anniversary in business, let me recap the 5 lessons I learnt as an entrepreneur.

1. YOUR TEAM

Putting together a team that shares your passion and is capable is so very important. It’s not just about filling seats and budgets, it’s all about each team member bringing a unique skill and passion. We went one at a time and today have an enviable team of 15 talented professionals in the team.

“The real good teams and the great teams find a way to win”

2. PASSION WILL FUEL GROWTH

We had drawn out a comprehensive process to deliver service quality to our customers, we stuck to it – even if it meant we lost out or it sent our costs higher. When you follow your passion and demonstrate attention to detail, the growth follows and how!

“When people feel your passion they can’t help but want to work with you. The world needs what you have to offer.”

3. EVERY CLIENT IS NOT A RIGHT FIT FOR YOU EITHER

You won’t be the right fit for everyone and not every client is the right fit for you either. You can trust that when you surrender a client that is not right for you, the universe will send two more who are.

“Sometimes all we need is a fresh start.”

4. BECOME A CREDIBLE PARTNER

You can offer so many services, you are so confident and brimming with enthusiasm to do everything. It’s important to be focused and to remember “few things done really well” go a long way in establishing you as a credible partner.

“It’s very easy to be different but very difficult to be better”

5. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

After every setback, the thought of giving up crosses your mind. That’s when you need to draw on the reserves and tell yourself you are in a marathon, not a sprint.

Good things take time, patience and perseverance.

Focus on doing things right every time, and keep that fire burning to win.

It’s been an exciting one year building a team that delivered stellar results, as I look back on the journey and successes this past year, there’s so much to thank family, friends and associates for trusting in me and my idea.
